#UNFunken4SDGs
Sustainability is in the hearts of the UN Funken members and we believe that carnival can maintain the traditional values as well as become more sustainable into the future.
Each year the UN Funken select a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to highlight. We try to lead by example and believe that making small changes to the way we take part in carnival can have a big impact on our planet.
Below are some actions we have taken to reduce the UN Funken Carnival Association’s environmental impact:
- We have no plastic throwing materials such as toys and throw alternative items which are bio-degradable or easily recyclable.
- We try, where possible to buy Kamelle (throwing material) which will be eaten, so that it does not become waste.
- In addition to traditional Kamelle, we look for alternative options such as tea bags, seed packets etc.
- Our Orden is made of wood and hangs from a self-sewn ribbon. The fabric is chosen by our UNiversa/o/e. A smaller commemorative pin is added to denote the year.
- When possible we choose to walk the parade and use only emission free vehicles such as Rickshaws, handcarts or bicycles.
- Working together with the Festausschuss Bonner Karneval, the unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions from the Rosenmontag parade are calculated, and members and supporters of the UN Funken contribute donations to help mitigate the parade’s climate impact in Bonn.
